Katherine Gorge: Cruise, Canoe or Hike?
Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) isn't just one gorge — it's 13 separate sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River over 23 million years. Towering cliffs up to 70 metres high, crystal-clear water, and a silence broken only by cockatoos and whistling kites.
The question every visitor faces: how should you experience it?
Option 1: The Cruise ($72-112)
Two-Gorge Cruise (2 hours, $72)
The most popular option. A flat-bottomed boat takes you through the first two gorges with a knowledgeable guide explaining the geology and Jawoyn cultural significance. Maximum 10 passengers per boat ensures an intimate experience.
Pros: Easy, informative, suitable for all fitness levels Cons: You're on someone else's schedule, can feel rushedThree-Gorge Cruise (4 hours)
Goes further with short walks between gorges. More immersive.
Dawn Cruise
Early morning mist rising off the water, golden light on the cliffs. The most photogenic option.
Option 2: The Canoe ($65-100) — Our Pick
Half-day hire: $65 single, $100 doubleThis is the way to do it. Paddle at your own pace between sandstone walls, stop to swim in the gorge, pull over on a sandy beach for lunch. You can go as far as your arms take you — most people reach the second or third gorge.
Pros: Freedom, swimming, your own pace, more gorges Cons: Requires moderate fitness, you carry the canoe between gorges (short portage) Tip: Start early (8am) to get further before the heat. Bring waterproof bags for cameras.Option 3: Helicopter ($110+)
See the gorge system from above — all 13 gorges stretching into the sandstone plateau. A completely different perspective that reveals the scale. Flights from 10 minutes ($110) to longer tours.
Option 4: Hiking
Jatbula Trail (62km, 4-5 days)
One of Australia's great multi-day walks. From Nitmiluk to Edith Falls through the sandstone escarpment country. Permit required, limited numbers.
Day Walks
Multiple walks from 2km to 12km along the gorge rim, with lookout points over the river system. The Baruwei Walk (6km loop) gives the best combination of effort and reward.
Nearby: Katherine Hot Springs
After your gorge adventure, head to Katherine Hot Springs — free, in-town thermal pools at a constant 32°C. A palm-lined river setting perfect for tired muscles.
Nearby: Edith Falls
60km north of Katherine, Edith Falls (Leliyn) is a pandanus-fringed swimming hole with an upper pool trail that rewards you with cascading rock pools. One of the NT's most underrated swims.
