The mistakes that cost people money, ruin their trips, or put them in danger. Written from real traveller stories so you don't repeat them.
Tourists see a beautiful river, creek, or beach and jump in. "It looks safe," they say. "There's no signs." They assume crocodiles are rare or only in certain areas.
Saltwater crocodiles live in ALL NT waterways — rivers, creeks, harbours, beaches, billabongs, even the open ocean. They can be 6m long, weigh 1,000kg, and can be invisible until they strike. The NT has 100,000+ wild crocs. No sign doesn't mean no crocs — it means nobody has put a sign there yet.
ONLY swim in designated, croc-monitored swimming holes. Berry Springs, Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole, Wangi Falls, Katherine Hot Springs, Bitter Springs, Wave Lagoon — these are all actively monitored. If there's no "Safe to Swim" sign, assume there are crocs. Report sightings: 1800 453 210.
Your life. There are 1-2 croc attacks per year in the NT. Some are fatal.
