Understanding and respecting cultural protocols enriches your experience and honours the Traditional Owners.
Some areas are restricted or have separate men's and women's areas. Always follow signs. Never enter closed areas. If unsure, ask.
Always ask before photographing Aboriginal people, art, or ceremonies. Some sites prohibit photography entirely. Respect 'No Photography' signs.
Arnhem Land requires a permit from the Northern Land Council. Tiwi Islands require a tour booking. Some other areas have specific access requirements.
Don't touch rock art — oils from skin damage it. Stay on marked paths. Don't remove anything from sites.
When a community is in mourning, you may be asked to leave or avoid certain areas. Respect this completely — it's not personal.
In remote communities, ask before entering. Don't photograph people without permission. Support Indigenous art by buying from authorised art centres, not roadside sellers.
The NT has over 100 distinct Aboriginal language groups — more linguistic diversity per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on Earth.
