Swimming the West MacDonnell Ranges
When people think of the Red Centre, they picture dry desert. They don't picture swimming. That's a mistake.
The West MacDonnell Ranges — stretching 160km west of Alice Springs — hide some of Australia's most spectacular swimming holes inside 300-million-year-old gorges. The water is cold, crystal clear, and surrounded by ancient red quartzite walls.
The Swimming Holes
1. Ormiston Gorge — The Crown Jewel
Distance from Alice: 135km (1.5 hours) Water temperature: Cold year-round (13-18°C) Why it's special: A deep permanent waterhole enclosed by a massive rock amphitheatre. The red walls glow at sunrise, the acoustics inside the gorge are extraordinary, and on a still morning, the reflections are perfect. Tip: Camp at Ormiston ($10/person) and swim at sunrise. You'll have the gorge entirely to yourself from 6am to 9am. Day-trippers don't arrive until 10am.2. Ellery Creek Big Hole
Distance from Alice: 88km (1 hour) Water temperature: Cold (naturally spring-fed) Why it's special: A wide waterhole at the base of dramatic red cliffs. The setting is classic outback — red rock, blue sky, clear water. Popular with families because of easy access.3. Glen Helen Gorge
Distance from Alice: 132km (1.5 hours) Water temperature: Cold Why it's special: Where the Finke River — one of the oldest rivers in the world — cuts through the MacDonnell Ranges. Dramatic gap in the ranges with a deep permanent pool.4. Redbank Gorge
Distance from Alice: 156km (2 hours, last 12km unsealed) Water temperature: Very cold Why it's special: A narrow slot gorge where you wade/swim through cold water between towering walls. Bring a lilo or pool noodle to float. The most adventurous swim on the list.5. Serpentine Gorge
Distance from Alice: 99km Water temperature: Cold Why it's special: A narrow gorge with a cool pool at the end. The 1.3km walk in gives you a sense of isolation that the more popular gorges don't have.6. Simpsons Gap
Distance from Alice: 22km (20 minutes) Water temperature: Seasonal (sometimes dry) Why it's special: The closest gorge to Alice Springs. Not always swimmable, but the gap itself is dramatic and home to black-footed rock wallabies at dawn and dusk.Essential Rules
- ●Carry ALL your food and water. There are zero shops between Simpsons Gap and Glen Helen (130km). The Glen Helen homestead has basic food and cold drinks.
- ●Phone coverage is ZERO in the ranges. Tell someone your plans.
- ●Water is cold — refreshing in summer, bracing in winter. Bring a towel and warm layer.
- ●Camp at Ormiston. It deserves a full day, and the sunrise swim is the best experience in the ranges.
