Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The Complete Guide
Kings Canyon (Watarrka) is a 100-metre-deep sandstone canyon in the George Gill Range, 323km from Alice Springs. The Rim Walk is 6km, takes 3-4 hours, and is consistently rated as one of Australia's best day hikes.
The Walk
The 500 Stairs
The walk starts with a steep climb up 500 sandstone steps — affectionately known as "Heart Attack Hill." It takes 15-20 minutes and it's the hardest part. After this, the rest of the walk is relatively flat.
The Rim
Once on top, you walk along the edge of the canyon with views down 100m sheer sandstone walls. The scale is breathtaking — the walls are 440 million years old.
The Lost City
Weathered sandstone domes that look like the ruins of an ancient city. Erosion has created beehive-shaped formations that glow orange at sunrise.
The Garden of Eden
The highlight. At the halfway point, the trail descends into a sheltered valley with a permanent waterhole surrounded by cycad palms — plants that have survived unchanged for millions of years. It feels like stepping into a hidden world.
Critical Safety Information
The Rim Walk CLOSES when temperature exceeds 36°C. This is not a suggestion — it's a safety closure. People are airlifted out every year from heat exhaustion.- ●Start before 7am in warm months (September-March)
- ●Carry minimum 3 litres of water per person
- ●Wear sturdy shoes — the sandstone is uneven and the edges are unfenced
- ●Allow 3-4 hours for the full circuit
- ●Don't attempt the Rim Walk if you're not reasonably fit — the Kings Creek Walk (2.6km, easy) is a beautiful alternative along the canyon floor
When to Visit
- ●Best months: April-September (cool mornings, warm days)
- ●Avoid: December-February (extreme heat, walk often closed by 9am)
- ●Sunrise: Starting at dawn gives you the best light and coolest temperatures
Where to Stay
- ●Kings Canyon Resort ($200-400/night) — the only resort, with restaurant and pool
- ●Kings Creek Station ($20/person camping, $150 safari cabin) — working cattle station with outback atmosphere
- ●Free bush camping at designated rest areas along Luritja Road
The Drive
Kings Canyon is 323km from Alice Springs (3.5 hours) and 300km from Uluru (3 hours). The road is sealed and 2WD-accessible. There is NO fuel between Erldunda and Kings Canyon (245km) — fill up before you leave.
Stargazing
Kings Canyon has some of the darkest skies in Australia. Zero light pollution. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches overhead in vivid detail. Bring a camera with a tripod — the night photography opportunities are extraordinary.
