The MacDonnell Ranges stretch 644km east and west of Alice Springs — an ancient chain of parallel ridges 300–400 million years old, forming one of the most visually spectacular landscapes in Australia. The West MacDonnells contain the major gorge country; the East MacDonnells are more remote and less visited. The MacDonnell Ranges are the dominant geographic feature of Central Australia and one of the oldest exposed mountain ranges on Earth. The gorge country within them is extraordinary.
