Top End
Litchfield is the Top End's best day trip — three world-class swimming holes, bizarre termite mounds, and monsoon forest walks, all within 2 hours of Darwin.
Leave Darwin by 7am. Arrive Florence Falls by 8:30am — you'll have the plunge pool to yourself. 135 stairs down through monsoon forest. Swim for an hour. Then drive 5 min to Buley Rockhole — cascading natural spa pools. Spend 1-2 hours.
Drive to Wangi Falls (30 min) — the park's most accessible and photographed swimming hole. Flat walk to the pool, monsoon vine forest backdrop. Stop at Magnetic Termite Mounds on the way back — bizarre 2m structures aligned north-south.
Return to Darwin by 5-6pm. Sunset drinks at Darwin Sailing Club or Stokes Hill Wharf.
- Arrive at Florence by 8:30am to beat crowds
- Pack lunch — no shops in the park
- Wear reef shoes at Buley
- Wangi may close in wet season if crocs detected
Per person, self-drive. Excludes flights.
