NT Timeline

Explorer John McDouall Stuart completed the first successful south-to-north crossing of the Australian continent, reaching a muddy beach on Van Diemen Gulf about 100km east of modern Darwin. After six failed attempts over three years, Stuart's expedition of 10 men finally broke through. His route would later determine the path of the Overland Telegraph and the Stuart Highway. He returned to Adelaide a broken man and died just four years later, aged 50.
