Travelling the NT with Kids
The Northern Territory is one of Australia's best family destinations — wild wildlife, safe swimming holes, markets with food every kid loves, and experiences they'll talk about for years. The key is knowing which spots work for families and which don't.
Best Family Activities by Age
Under 5s
- ●Leanyer Recreation Park (Darwin) — FREE water playground with splash pads and slides
- ●Berry Springs — Shallow, crystal-clear, croc-monitored pools perfect for wading
- ●Wave Lagoon ($7 adults, $5 kids) — Man-made waves in a safe pool at Darwin Waterfront
- ●Crocosaurus Cove ($40/$25) — Touch a baby croc! See massive salties through glass
- ●Territory Wildlife Park ($37/$18) — Walk-through aviaries, aquarium, feeding talks
Ages 5-12
All of the above, plus:
- ●Buley Rockhole (Litchfield) — Shallow cascading pools, natural water slides
- ●Adelaide River Jumping Croc Cruise ($65/$40) — Kids go crazy for this
- ●Mindil Beach Markets — Satay sticks, mango smoothies, and sunset entertainment
- ●Lake Alexander (East Point, Darwin) — Fenced swimming lagoon with BBQs and wallabies at dusk
- ●Florence Falls (Litchfield) — The 135 stairs are an adventure in themselves
Teens
All of the above, plus:
- ●Nitmiluk Gorge canoe hire — Paddle through gorges together
- ●Kings Canyon Rim Walk — Challenging enough to feel like an achievement
- ●Uluru Base Walk — 10.6km of ancient landscape
- ●NT Quiz (on our app!) — Competitive learning about NT facts
Croc-Safe Swimming
This is the #1 concern for families. The rules are simple:
- ●Only swim where signs say "Safe to Swim"
- ●All designated swimming holes are actively croc-monitored
- ●The Red Centre (Alice Springs, MacDonnell Ranges) has ZERO crocs — any waterhole is safe
Top 5 Family Swimming Spots
1. Berry Springs — Shallow, clear, easy access, picnic area
2. Buley Rockhole — Natural cascading pools, kids can splash between them
3. Wave Lagoon — Man-made waves, lifeguards, safe
4. Lake Alexander — Fenced lagoon, BBQs, shade, wallabies
5. Katherine Hot Springs — Free, warm (32°C), in-town
Food That Kids Will Eat
- ●Mindil Beach Markets — Satay chicken sticks ($4), mango smoothies, spring rolls
- ●Stokes Hill Wharf — Fish and chips with harbour views
- ●Parap Markets — Fruit smoothies, crepes, satay
- ●Any Territory pub — Chicken schnitzel + chips is universal
Practical Family Tips
- ●Sunscreen: Apply every 2 hours. UV index regularly exceeds 11 in the NT. Kids burn in minutes
- ●Water: 2-3L per child per day minimum. Carry more than you think
- ●Insect repellent: Tropical-strength. Especially at dusk near water
- ●Snacks in the car: Always. Distances between stops are huge
- ●Change of clothes: Keep a spare set in the car. Kids WILL get wet
- ●Start early: Most outdoor activities are best before 10am when it's cooler
