There's no single "best time" to visit the Northern Territory. Each month offers different experiences, weather, and opportunities. This guide helps you choose the right month for your interests.
January-February: Deep Wet Season
Top End: 32-35°C, 80%+ humidity, daily storms, spectacular lightning. Some roads closed. Waterfalls at peak flow. Barramundi fishing in prime run-off season. Red Centre: Hot (40°C+). Some walks close due to heat. Fewer crowds. Best for: Storm chasers, barra fishing, budget travellers (lowest prices)March-April: Late Wet / Run-Off
Top End: Storms easing, humidity still high. Green, lush landscapes. Best barra fishing of the year as run-off floods rivers. Red Centre: Cooling down. Comfortable for hiking. Autumn colours in gorges. Best for: Fishing, photography (green landscapes), value accommodationMay: The Sweet Spot
